“I don’t know what kind of an artist I am” JASPER JOHNS

“I paint because it releases me from myself, a world not unconnected to this but heightened or exaggerated, but not necessarily untrue. The work contains by its nature the freedom of interpretation and therefore engages with the brain and sometimes the intuition of each viewer. The possibility of the hope, however remote, that the viewer may even if only for a little while be raised up in some way, be caused to ponder or indeed ‘scratch their head ‘ because of one of my pictures makes it all worthwhile. In essence like Jasper Johns, I don’t know what kind of artist I am, I just paint the pictures”.
